MD-PhD student (100%) in (bio)medical ethics

Department: The Institute for Biomedical Ethics, University of Basel, Switzerland (IBMB, website: http://ibmb.unibas.ch/ ), is dedicated to research and teaching of bioethics at the Medical and Science Faculties, as well as the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (a department of the ETH Zurich,located in Basel). We are looking for enthusiastic collaborators to join our PhD program. We encourage in particular advanced medical students or young medical doctors to apply who share our dedication to study challenging ethical problems related to medicine and the life sciences.
Available: Spring or summer 2012, to be negotiated
Salary: 43 000 Swiss francs per year
Contract type: 3 years.

Main job purpose:

  1. PhD thesis on questions related to bioethics, medical ethics and/or human rights: a project of your choice or projects on advances directives and/or ethical issues of nanomedicine and synthetic biology, research ethics, other types of biotechnology, genetics), publications in biomedical ethics/ethics and human rights.
  2. Possibility to contribute to the academic life of the IBMB, including small-scale contributions to teaching, as well as collaboration in research projects, academic publications in peer reviewed journals.

Qualifications:

  1. Good/excellent academic grades/evaluations (BA or MA in medicine, or MD).
  2. Enthusiasm, independence, responsibility, interest in academic career.
  3. Students with a master in bioethics and/or (bio-/health) law, social sciences, life sciences, medicine and/or philosophy/theology with strong interest in bioethical and human rights problems can also apply.
  4. Experience with quantitative/qualitative research methods (including SPSS/PASW/Atlas.ti) is a plus but not a requirement. Methodology courses will be taught as part of the PhD program.
  5. Writing skills (ideally at least one publication as first author in a peer reviewed journal)
  6. Experience in bioethics/law/human rights, research ethics including animal ethics; environmental ethics, medical ethics or related areas is valuable.
  7. Excellent English (both speaking and writing); in addition good knowledge of German and/or French.

GK SOCLIFE - Scholarships
SOCLIFE is an interdisciplinary Research Training Group at the University of Cologne which offers, beside other things, a structured doctoral program at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences. PhD studentship: Development of molecular simulation methods for patient specific HIV drug treatment

The UCL Centre for Computational Science seeks to appoint a PhD student, funded by the UCLH/UCL Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre (CBRC), to pursue an interdisciplinary, translational research project in the area of patient specific HIV drug treatment, using genotypic molecular simulation.  The project will be supervised by Professor Peter Coveney (UCL Centre for Computational Science) and Professor Deenan Pillay (UCL Centre for Infection), and will involve:

  1. Analysis/development of current and alternative methods for molecular binding affinity calculation, for HIV enzymes and their anti-retroviral ligands
  2. Development of a HIV-1 integrase/inhibitor binding affinity calculation system
  3. Establishment of links with experimentalists to facilitate validation of findings from simulations and provide information on novel mutations and anti-retroviral mutational pathways to be investigated
  4. Incorporation of new/improved HIV drug/enzyme simulations into patient–specific a treatment evaluation and decision support pipeline.

The post requires a candidate with a strong ability in physical/computational science, an affinity for and interest in biological sciences, and who is willing to integrate and progress their knowledge across these disciplines.

Students will register during the 2009/10 academic year for a three year full-time MPhil/PhD degree, with an expected commencement date of 1st October 2009. Funding includes UK/EU tuition fees and a tax-free stipend equivalent to the MRC rate of £15,100 (in 2008/9).  The position is available to both UK and EU applicants who must have, or expect to obtain, a very good first degree in a relevant subject (Chemistry, Physics, Molecular Virology, Computer Science) as a minimum qualification.

Job Description
In close cooperation with IARD Senior Management, the Program Director will have two primary responsibilities:

1. Overall management of IARD's current program.
2. New program development including overall proposal preparation and submission for funding to potential donors such as USAID, UN Organization, World Bank, Foreign Governments, European Union, Foundations and private donors in Africa.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure effective and efficient management.- Supervise and give guidance to program managers on project design, implementation, evaluation, and personnel issues.
  2. Prepare detailed implementation plan, collect baseline data and develop operational procedures for the implementation of the new programs.
  3. Ensure compliance with IARD and donors of operational and financial policies and procedures and reporting requirements; track grant spending.
  4. Coordinate all IARD staff members for purposes of monitoring and evaluation of all USG and international donor programs.
  5. Prepare monthly, semi-annual, and final program reports.
  6. Coordinate and maintain professional working relations with local authorities, private organizations, and communities.
  7. Maintain good working relationships with donors, Government of Host Country, and collaborating institutions, with frequent visits to project sites and communities.
  8. Research and identify funding sources, proposal requirements, and submittal deadline for new programs in Host Country.
  9. Write, edit, and proofread proposals to be submitted to donor agencies and private funding sources.
  10. Secure new funding and extension funding for existing IARD  programs.
  11. Increase IARD's local, national and international visibility through public relations.
  12. Perform additional assignments as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Minimum of 5 years management experience.
  2. Bachelor's degree required; Graduate degree preferred.
  3. Demonstrated ability to manage a series of complex, new and on-going activities, as well as provide leadership in a collegial team environment.

Job Description
IARD is seeking a Director of Finance, who will be reporting directly to the Director General. The Director of Finance would be primarily required to plan, lead, integrate, and Coordinate the financial services of the centre. He/she would thus have overall responsibility for providing high quality managerial and financial services to the research programs. As a member of IARD's senior management team, along with the Director General, the Assistant Directors General. The Director of Finance would be actively involved in the strategic planning and overall guidance of the Centre, and in developing and implementing an innovative and productive resource mobilization strategy.

The Director of Finance will perform the following specific duties: 

  1. Advising the Director General on all matters relating to the finances of the Centre.
  2. Liaising with IARD's independent auditors.
  3. Ensuring that all financial accounts and records at the headquarters and outreach locations meet management, donor and other stakeholder requirements.
  4. Ensuring that all accounting operations are effectively and efficiently performed.
  5. Maintaining effective financial control over the assets and liabilities, income and disbursements of the Centre.
  6. Preparing and maintaining periodic financial, analytical, and interpretive reports for the Management.
  7. Providing statistical and analytical services to the programs, departments, and units, and assisting them in the formulation of project budgeting.
  8. Setting high standards of professional, technical, and business conduct for the departmental staff.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. At least a Bachelor's degree in Accounting (an MBA or similar postgraduate degree is preferred) with additional professional accounting qualifications such as CPA or CA.
  2. Minimum of 7 years experience in finance, 3 of which must be at the senior management level.
  3. Formal training in management systems and procedures.
  4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  5. Proficiency in the use of computerized information systems.
